We the people...

In Obama's speech regarding patriotism he states that, "patriotism is always more then just loyalty to a place on a map or a certain kind of people." He also goes on to say that, "patriotism can never be defined as loyalty to any particular leader or government or policy." I think that he is stating that, we are all different. Different subjects ring a different bell with different people. It would be really hard to define this clearly when looking at all the variables that are involved. When looking at the pictures found on page 251, I believe that all of the images support that statement.

The old lady in the Red Hat Society shows her patriotism by displaying a flag on her hat, and just because she is part of one group doesnt meant that she cant show loyality to her country as well. Furthermore, just because someone is homosexual doesnt mean that they dont have a undying loyality to the country in which they live in. Just because someone belongs to a group or several different groups, doesnt effect their love for the country in which they live in.

In ways I agree with Obama's defintion, in someways however I do not. I do agree that patriotism is more then just a loyality to a place. However, I also think that this includes honoring the country that you stand by. Meaning that when the Pledge of Allegiance is being recited or the National Anthem is being played, one that claims that they are "patriotic" should stand up and be proud of the country that they live in.
