Patriotism in America

Obama vs. Posters: It's true that his definition and the pictures on pages 254 and 255 are quite different but I have factors that I like about both. On Obama's I like that he thinks that patriotism in more than being loyal to a place, its being loyal to the ideas of that place. I also agree that because our country is so diverse nobody will ever agree 100% with what the American government does. On page 255 I like the picture of the woman dressed for what I assume as a fourth of july celebration, it shows the happiness and patriotism of the American people. I don't agree with the poster on page 254 but is it true? of course, was our country supposed to be one that questions government? yes, do most people do it? No. The other picture on 255 shows that America has a lot of different people, which America does and so this shows how everybody should be represented.

Obama's speech conflicts greatly with the poster on 254 because Obama says we should question authority and only support our government when they deserve it but the poster says sometimes even when we don't agree with the government we should just sit back and be quiet. Interesting take.

Edward Abbey said " A patriot must always be ready to defend his country against his government" He obviously agrees with Obama that we are patriots of our people.

The similarities for the two are that no matter what America is our home and many people have patriotism. We as a people follow most ideals from America but
