Rock n' Roll

The term “rock n’ roll” is often misused in my opinion. Especially when someone uses it to describe a type of music that is nothing like what real rock n’ roll is to me. First of all, rock music is more than just plugging in your guitar and cranking the volume to ten. It is more than growing your hair out, smoking cigarettes and trying to create a rebellious image for one’s self. “Rock n’ Roll” is an essence, an underlying energy that has no particular sound. It is a connection, a feeling, a community of blues and understanding.
Rock n’ roll is not friendly to the standard or the authority. Rock n’ roll is a counter culture. For example, mainstream “rock” bands like Nickelback, Daughtry and Bon Jovi, bands that mommy and daddy might even enjoy, are not rock n’ roll in my opinion. They are pop music. Just like a lot of “country” artist today. On the other hand, artist ranging from Johnny Cash to John Lee Hooker, The Doors to Sublime and John Lennon to The Notorious B.I.G. are all considered rock n’ roll in my opinion.
Despite my best efforts to define rock n’ roll, not everybody has the same ideas as I do. Some people might define rock music as anything from the 60s and 70s. Others, loud and powerful amplification. However, once I gather information from sources like books, magazines and maybe ever movies and song lyrics, I can hopefully open one’s eye to what my definition of true rock n’ roll is.

Notorious B.I.G. was in the rap genre. What then differs rap from rock n' roll? ethnicity?
Mom and Dad used to live in the world of Rock n' Roll so if it's something that they like (or once liked) it can't be rock n' roll? Not Aerosmith or twisted sister or AC/DC? I think you may want to be careful with your wording on that one.

You could draw in quotes from famous Rock 'n Roll artists, or even from people in the entertainment world. Maybe your definition is shared by some of the rock legends. You could also do a quick survey/interview to see if anyone else on the campus agrees with what you think true Roll 'n Roll really is.

In your first sentence, you describe a stereotypical appearance of what a person who likes rock n' roll would be like. Maybe going in depth on what the true image of rock n' roll is or if there isn't, how rock n' roll took on this cliche appearances such as long hair, smoking, etc.

The Doors, Sublime, John Lennon, & The Notorious B.I.G. are all uniquely different from each other. So it seems your stating that rock n' roll isn't a genre itself but a genre that encompass other genre. I don't know any sources, but really looking into if rock n' roll encompass a wide vareity of genres could make your argument stronger.

This sounds like an interesting paper. I think like Ali and Jerry said though, you should be careful with comparing different bands. Maybe try and pick some bands that are more similar in style, but if, in your opinion, they are similar make sure you defend how or why you think they are.
